Immunoglobulin (IG) is used to treat multiple conditions.

It helps calm the immune system and reduce inflammatory flare ups associated with autoimmune and immune-mediated disorders.

It can also be used to increase the likelihood of a successful transplant for patients prior to an organ transplant (desensitization). It’s most commonly given through a drip into a vein (IVIG) or sometimes as an injection into the skin (SCIG).

As a specialty infusion pharmacy, our clinical teams have extensive training and experience with infusion therapies, rare diseases, and complex medical conditions.

  • Immune Globulin (IG) is a sterile solution of concentrated antibodies, extracted from blood plasma of healthy people.

It can both help the body fight infections and desensitize patients prior to organ transplant. There are two different forms of IG available—Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG) and Subcutaneous Immune Globulin (SCIG). Both forms of IG are used to treat a wide range of conditions.

For patients with immune deficiencies, fighting off common infections is a challenge. Administering IG boosts the immune system by providing lifesaving antibodies. IG is also used for patients with autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune disorders are characterized by immune systems that mistakenly attack the body, producing inflammation. IG helps to calm the immune system and reduce inflammatory flare ups associated with autoimmune disorders.

For highly sensitized pre-transplant patients, administering IG can result in an increased likelihood of successful transplantation.

  • Conditions:

    ► Dermatomyositis

► Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)

    ► Guillain-Barre Syndrome

    ► Immune Thrombocytopenia

    ► Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID)

    ► Lupus

    ► Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN)

    ► Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

    ► Myasthenia Gravis

    ► Myositis

    ► Polymyositis

    ► Primary Immunodeficiency (PID)

    ► Solid organ transplant patients:

    ► ► Pre-transplant for the highly-sensitized

► ► Post-transplant for those in risk of rejection

  • IG therapy has two main routes of administration—intravenously (IV) or subcutaneously (SC).

IV administration is infused over several hours, whereas SC is injected directly under the surface of your skin. The dose of IG is calculated by your weight and can be administered in one day or over several days, depending on your doctor’s orders.

IVIG can be given to you in the comfort of your home or one of our infusion suites by a registered nurse who will monitor you and remain with you during the entire infusion.

SCIG injections can be administered by the patient without the need for an in-home nurse allowing for increased flexibility, reduced “down-time,” and independence. The duration of therapy can be just one treatment or may last for several months.

  • It’s important to remember that like any other medication, IG can affect everyone differently.

Not everyone will experience side effects, but when they do, reactions can vary from mild to moderate. Side effects may occur within 30-60 minutes after the start of the infusion or up to 48 hours after injection or infusion. Most of these reactions are due to the rate of administration or concentration of the infusion. Side effects are known to be less severe with SCIG.

If you experience side effects, your doctor may order pre-infusion medications, which can be given to reduce symptoms. Examples of pre-medications include acetaminophen (Tylenol), diphenhydramine (Benadryl), and IV hydration (IV fluids).

    Side effects may include:

    ► Blood pressure changes

    ► Back pain

    ► Chest tightness

    ► Chest pain

    ► Chills

    ► Dizziness

    ► Headache

    ► Fatigue

    ► Fever

    ► Flushing

    ► Muscle cramps

    ► Nausea

    ► Rash

    ► Rigors

    ► Vomiting

    ► Wheezing

  • There are some individuals who should not be prescribed IG therapy. Please check with your healthcare provider to see if IG therapy is right for you.
